FL: The Dry Tortugas Pt.2--Fort Jefferson, Cont.

There was just too much about this day trip to the Dry Tortugas to get into one post. We took so many pictures--just could not get over that we were there and experiencing something so amazing, that seemed like a fantasy out of time. So really, I'm sparing you--these are still only a fraction of what I could show you!

Now this was a fascinating piece of history--essential a "gun" to shoot red-hot cannonballs!  (Click to embiggen)

I could not get over how huge the fort was, so far out here from the mainland US. It was hard to imagine it filled with soldiers, living life.

This was a piece of more modern history--a fishing boat used by Cuban refugees. If they land at Fort Jefferson they are taken to Florida and automatically granted asylum. Surprised? I was!  You can read more about the history of this policy here

And all the while, these windows to the sea surround us.

There was no such thing as a bad view.

Up on top of the fort we could examine up close the cannons.

And take in the view.

We could have explored there for hours more. But our morning was over and it was time for lunch and finally surrendering to the beckon of that beautiful green expanse waiting for us!
