Hello Moms!
I cannot believe I forgot to post this sooner--it's been that kind of week!
If anyone is interested, I will be leading a guided poetry hike in the redwoods tomorrow. So far I know it will be my family and the female Kimballs--some other homeschool families might show up, don't know who. We will meet at the Henry Cowell nature center at 11:45 and start our nature walk at noon sharp. We will be doing the Redwood Grove Trail, in case you are a little late, just come catch up.
Bring notebooks and writing tools--I'll provide the poetry prompts that even young kids can do. Mothers are welcome to do the writing for our kids! : )
If you want to join us for a picnic, just come a little earlier, as we will be lunching there on the deck by the nature center.
So, very sorry this is short notice--anyone who would like to come and can, we would love to have you.

totally unique history/music learning opportunity
It's local, and I *think* it will be FREE too! (finding out for sure)
Here is the original post by a local homeschool mom:
Hi everyone, I was intrigued that the SC Baroque Festival is having a glass armonica concert coming up on February 12. http://www.scbaroque.com/concerts.html In case you didn't see my previous note about this, this is an instrument that Benjamin Franklin invented and which had a brief period of popularity before the piano took over. The performer is both a musician and a historian of this instrument.
I inquired about getting some kids in to meet the performer and see the instrument that afternoon, and they are open to having a small group come. They also wanted me to point out that every Baroque Festival concert has youth (under 18) tickets for only $3, so if you have a child old enough to sit through the concert, they'd love to see more interested kids at the actual concerts, too.
They can't give me an exact time yet, but the fieldtrip will be in the afternoon of February 12 at the UCSC Music Recital Hall. Please e-mail me if you want to attend, and I will put together a list and let you know what time the week of the concert. Kids any age are welcome, but of course your child should be able to be respectful of the instrument and the musician in order to be able to participate fully! :)

FREE passes to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Nov. 15!
Hello everyone!
We signed up for the Homeschool Day at the Aquarium on Nov. 15, and now we can't go, because our girls have a play performance that night! (This is what happens when you are asked to sign up before the Fall semester even begins) ALSO, we got tickets for the McNabbs, but then they realized they would not be back in CA quite that soon. Bummer! The good news for you is that we now have two families worth of tickets available for anyone who had not signed up previously! PLEASE let me know if you are interested ASAP. Otherwise I will post this on another homeschool forum that is county wide, or worst case will just let the aquarium know we can't come.
The program sounds GREAT too. : ( Hope someone out there can take our place!

Old School Monday--MONDAY! ; )
Hi Moms!
It's here: Our first Old School Monday of the new school year! We are meeting this Monday, Sept. 27 at a new time: 12:30. There were people who could not come last year when we had it in the morning, and then some people who could not come in the afternoon, so let's try this and see what we think. Here is the agenda for this Monday:
*Meet at 12:30 there at the usual classroom at Vintage. You can choose to eat lunch before you come or bring a sack lunch for your family.
*At the beginning of the summer, I told you all that our first OSM we would do the "What I Did With My Summer Vacations" booths again--well, because of the timing of things this year, we are not going to do that after all. BUT if your child has something to share, esp. something he/she has written or made over the summer or here at the start of the school year, please bring it! We will start off with a little Show and Tell for anyone who wants to participate. : )
*We will hang out and chat until 1:00, when we will head out on a little field trip/adventure to celebrate the start of our new school year. We will be walking down to the little path that leads over to Harvey West, and on our way, we will stop for ice cream cones! So bring $ for ice cream, if you want to partake, and if you don't want to, or if you come late, just meet us at Harvey West.
*While the kids play, we moms will get to hang out! In particular, be thinking about what you would love to see happen during our monthly OSM gatherings, and think about if there is any activity/lesson you and/or your kids would like to "host" anytime this fall.
*We'll hang out there at the park until about 2, and then we will walk back and end about 2:30 (perfect timing for those who are going on to Musical Mondays).
So this Fall Old School Mondays will meet the 4th Monday of every month, at 12:30. Go ahead and mark your calendars for Oct. 25 and Nov. 22. In December, because of the holidays, we will meet on the 20th.
***If you have any curriculum or school/art supplies you no longer want hanging around your house, bring them on Monday! We will have a homeschool stuff swap in the adjoining classroom and make sure all interested moms get to look through (without the kids hanging on you).
****And please invite friends!

New local science vendors!
My Ocan Grove E.S. just sent out a list of new approved vendors, and on it are two I have been hoping for:
1) The Mad Molecule science store here in Aptos, in the Rio Del Mar shopping center (where Safeway is).
2) Science classes at Quail Hollow Ranch! Whoo-hoo!
And speaking of Quail Hollow, I just now realized that they offer FREE field trips, if we schedule them in advance! Check out this brochure for the possibilities--I think this year we are going to have to schedule a few for Vintage Homeschool Adventures. : )

Through the use of dynamic media displays, hands-on activities, touchable fossils, taxidermy specimens, and live tree shrews, the exhibition will highlight distinctive mammalian qualities and illuminate the shared ancestry that unites these diverse creatures.
Extreme Mammals is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco; Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, Canada; and Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Photo: © AMNH/D. Finnin

Proposing a Happy Hollows Field Trip!
Hello Vintage Moms!
I would like to propose an "end of the school year" field trip to Happy Hollows in San Jose. Our family has never been there, and it seems like a good time to go. If we get 14 or more people, we can get a very nice group discount ($8 per ticket instead of $12). My little family can account for 4 of these--anyone else want to join us?
Please email me or let me know in the comment here that you are interested, and then we can set up a date. I think it should be soon, before the school kids get out, but will be very flexible. : )

FYI: website for FREE field trips
Here is something else that got passed my way, a new site that collects information about free field trips. I am not sure how helpful it will be in our area (there were only 2 activities within 30 miles of Aptos), but it could be a great tool for checking out possible field trips around the state, AND since they are free field trips, it does not hurt to bookmark this site and check every now and then.
I am a sucker for FREE! ; )

FYI: Field Trip to Johnson Farm
This is an all-area field trip, not one specific to Ocean Grove or Vintage Homeschool Days. But it sounds like fun!
(Hope you all don't mind the influx of emails--can you tell I am cleaning out my inbox today? : )

FIELD TRIP – JOHNSON FARM
Date: Tuesday, May 25, 2010
Time: 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM. Please arrive by 11:30 AM
Location: Johnson's Farm, 16385 Two Bar Road, Boulder Creek
Cost: $6.00 per each child and also for each adult. Anyone 2 and over attending is $6.00
Join Farmer Rob at Johnson's Farm to help with the Spring Planting on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Scheduled tour is from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM. We are welcome to bring lunches and have lunch on the grounds after the tour.
It’s spring planting time at the farm! Farm visitors are put to "work" helping plow the fields and plant the crops. Children will learn the life cycles of plants, dig in newly plowed soil and help plant the corn patch. Kids will get their hands dirty and get to tell their family that they planted "Farmer Rob’s" corn. This is a one-hour tour that includes a hayride, a time to feed the farm animals, a lesson on planting crops and a sunflower seedling for each child to take home
If you are interested in attending or have questions, please email Kathy Newman at k_newman@sbcglobal.net
Payment will be due by Tues., May 18th to Kathy Newman to confirm your space.

FREE Science Show!

LET’S GO SCIENCE SHOW – May 24th
We currently have some complimentary tickets available for an upcoming science performance at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, Let’s Go Science, Monday, May 24, at 9:30 am. Please email Nancy Mueller for Study Guides for Grades K-3 and Grades 4-8 or a ticket order form if you are interested in bringing your children. The tickets are available on a first come, first served basis. Please let me know if you have any questions.
LET’S GO SCIENCE
The wacky and talented Professor Smart and Dr. Knowitall join forces for an educational, entertaining, exciting and
experiential extravaganza. Professor Smart shrinks his head, has toilet paper flying, juggles and has peoples’ hair
standing on end all while demonstrating principals of physics. Researcher and comedic sidekick Dr. Knowitall keeps
the facts straight.
During the Let's Go Science Show you and your kids will learn science concepts through impressive and memorable
demonstrations. They will learn about air pressure, figure out flight, see awesome optical illusions, be shocked by
static electricity, see experiments with falling masses, grasp gyroscopic properties and get a handle on the scientific
method.
60 minutes long for families and students K-8 (core audience grades 2-6). Older students grades 7-8 will understand more complicated concepts and younger ones grades K-1 will see it more as a magic show relating to science.
Thank you, Nancy

**While Ms. Mueller only mentions the 9:30 a.m. show, when I emailed to inquire, she said there was also an 11 a.m. show. So if you are going to try to go, ask her if there are still seats available at that later showing, to allow for the drive. Google Maps said it would take about 1 hr and 20 minutes from Aptos to get there. So I have requested free tickets for me and my two older girls, and also for Becky and her two girls. (I will find someone to watch my younger two that day, since I don't think they are old enough to appreciate the show)
And I am going to come up with something we can see on the way home, to make the drive worthwhile! Since we are studying CA history this year, it should not be a problem! : )
